A Bit of Spring Teching
It’s almost spring time in the southern hemisphere! Not my favorite season, for allergy reasons. Spring cleaning also tends to eliminate that extra energy found with the extended sunlight. But in my case, it’s anti-spring cleaning, tech style.
That is, starting things up rather than cleaning them out.
First order of business - get around to moving those old movies lurking in an external hard drive to my self-hosted Jellyfin! Sorry, it’s a family project only, so no public access. I had originally planned on uploading all of the movies, but quickly realized that 600GB of video is large, and that type of storage is…. not cheap. So, rather than uploading some movies that already exist on other streaming services (which we are not cutting), I’ve limited myself to those succulent family delights that we either never want to lose, or just aren’t available on any platform.
I am a coder, and something of a programmer, but let me tell you - THIS is the type of thing that AI can help you with; installing Jellyfin on a server with Terminal and setting up the contents. I can do so on my own, but it is a time-saver to have some troubleshooting assistance.
If you don’t know your way around a computer, this may not be the project for you. I’m a nerd, so I totally enjoy the process.
I also cleaned up my static website collection and run them through CloudPanel, to stay sane.
I also invested wasted an unnecessary amount of time researching Hetzner vs Netcup. Was scared a bit about cancellation scare stories on the Internet about Ketchup but drawn to their superior power for pricing. However, what killed me in the end was:
- Netcup pricing discounts require a 12-month commitment. Paid up front.
- Hetzner has been great and just works.
So got out of the way of my tech. I did jump on the first available CX 33 server to rescale from CX 23. Now stuff (the little I am running) is absolutely FLYING.
So nice when stuff just…. works. :)
